Head of the Hush Patrol

The Commissioner

Identity unknown

Quiet Hours have begun. Sleep well, Crown City.

Every night at ten, the same calm voice plays from every drone in the city: “Quiet Hours have begun. Sleep well, Crown City.” It belongs to Commissioner Nocturne, the Commissioner of the Night, who founded the Hush Patrol last spring.

She never raises her voice. She has never been photographed. The posters are signed with a single N. In public she wants “a city that sleeps,” and she runs the Hush Patrol from the Hush Tower on Crown Hill, the old bell tower everyone still calls the Crown.

She’s wrong about the method, not about the need. Plenty of people in Crown City want the nights quiet, and the Early Birds Association loves her for it.

Who she really is

A long-eared bat who grew up in the Crown’s belfry, in a colony that put up with the bell every midnight for a century. The night it cracked, her family slept through till morning for the first time. She revived the old post of Commissioner of the Night and built the Hush Patrol around it.

She’s tall, wrapped in a long coat like folded wings, with oversized noise-cancelling earmuffs. What she really wants is silence for her family’s home. What she fears is the bell ringing again, and every Shredquake lands in her head like one.

Season 2 shows her silhouette on the tower balcony. Season 3 shows her face.

Where her story goes

From nemesis to partner. In season 5 the bell is recast, and she and Rumble strike a deal: the Crown rings at midnight again, and the whole city keeps one true quiet hour, from 3 to 4 a.m., for everyone who needs it.
